Background:
Against the loud and consistent protestations of area residents over years, Sarasota South County Commissioners have voted to allow development of a historic single lane, dead-end dirt road, (East Manasota Beach Rd.), into a 4 lane highway connecting the massive, newly created, Wellen Park development (with its 30+ neighborhoods), directly to quiet Manasota Key.
By the county's own estimates this will bring an additional 25,000 cars a day to a tiny beach already overwhelmed with traffic.
Additionally, the expansion would cut through wetlands, untouched environmentally sensitive areas and quiet historic residential neighborhoods before dumping its traffic to a beach parking lot already bursting at the seams and a 2 lane quiet key road built for residents of the key - already buckling under the weight of increased traffic.
If this development is allowed to be completed - it will destroy the character and nature of the area the current residents have built their lives around - permanently.
What Were Petitioning for:
Were Calling on the DeSantis administration to immediatly HALT construction of this project and investigate the circumstances behind the commissioners dereliction of duty to uphold the will of their constituents. Whether it be by financial corruption or inability to stand up the the pressures brought to bear by greedy developers, they have demonstrably abandoned their sworn duty to enact the will of the residents and have been operating as kings with no accountability or allegiance to their constituents.
They have become totally out of control and must be held accountable.
The people of South County Sarasota will accept nothing less than reestablishment of citizen control of their community.
